As a painter Dick Buijtelaar captures his observations of street scenes in an uncommon manner. His paintings, etchings and lithographs lean towards the impressionism of Isaac Israëls as much as the still realism of Edward Hopper's. Both movements influence his works in a subtle way, causing the visitor to loose grip on his inner emotions. Where one picture arouses empathy, the other is evocative of a sense of coolness. Dick sometimes achieves this within one picture.
After his graduation from the Royal Academy in The Hague, Dick Buijtelaar worked mainly as a graphic designer. After he took up his passion for fine arts again in 2006, he joined Pulchri Studio in The Hague in 2008. This artist society with such famous initial members as Mesdag and Israëls was established in 1847. It is one of the places where Dick has regular expositions. His paintings have been bought by such clients as the American Embassy and the Peace Palace.
